1998 volvo v70 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Polishing the gold standard. introductionthe introduction of a new volvo is such a rare occasion that it deserves to be noticed. Change comes slowly to the swedish firm, which tends to keep good products in its catalog far longer than industry norms.  with the new s70 and v70--plus the soon-to-arrive c70 coupe and a later soft-top sibling--volvo is revealing both a new car and a new model designation system. Said system, in which s denotes a sedan, v a wagon (and, perhaps, a rumored sport-utility machine) and c a coupe or convertible, is combined with a number that applies to an entire line. S- and v90, for example, are the new names for the current 960 sedan and wagon.  it's not entirely correct to call the s- and v70s totally new. There's a strong resemblance to last model year's 850 that will be readily apparent at a glance. Good reason: the 70-series sedans and wagons are mildly facelifted 850s, with some improvements made where they count most and a new face that follows volvo design tradition but is more up-to-date.  but the 70-cars are new enough to warrant a good, long look, and keep enough of the virtues 850 owners prize to make them attractive replacements for those cars when trade-in time rolls around. Volvo hasn't offered a sporty coupe since the 1970s; this one is worth the wait. For starters, the basic s- and v70 use a 168-hp inline five-cylinder engine, transversely mounted and driving the front wheels. Standard equipment includes abs, air conditioning, all the usual interior power assists (with keyless remote entry for the door locks), heated side mirrors, an excellent sound system and a host of smaller but significant comfort and convenience features. The gt version adds aluminum alloy wheels, a power driver's seat and a power glass sunroof.  at the glt trim level, the 70s are equipped with a turbocharged version of the base powerplant, raising output to 190 hp and, more important in the real world, increasing torque and lowering the engine speed at which it peaks. An even more powerful (236 hp) edition of the same engine powers the t5 wagons and sedans, as well as the c70.  a separate model, the v70 awd, is volvo's first all-wheel drive car. It is powered by the same engine used in the glt and, like that version, is available only with an automatic transmission. interiorthe 70-series new interior represents a major improvement over what was already a well-designed and roomy cabin. Former hard corners have been rounded off, giving dashboard, center console and door panels a more attractive look. Soft-faced switches are placed for easier use. For example, window switches are now on the driver's door armrest rather than the center console, and the seats have new frames and padding.  other important changes are invisible. The b or central roof pillar has been reinforced to provide extra crush resistance in side impacts; driver and front-seat passenger are further protected by standard side-impact airbags. A new steering column design reduces wheel intrusion into the cabin in frontal impacts.  those items add mental comfort for occupants who are already well taken care of in physical comfort terms. Little is left to be added in the 70 series, though the automatic air conditioning (glt and t5 models) and optional heated front seats will be appreciated in certain climates. Wood trim accents are optional.  though more stylish, the interior has lost none of its functionality. The driving position is, as always, good, made better for all drivers by tilt/telescope steering wheel adjustments. Gauges for car and engine speed, fuel level and coolant temperature have large, clear markings, and can be supplemented with an optional trip computer. Stretch-out room for all five occupants is more than ample, and the sedan's large 15 cubic-foot trunk can be doubled in size by folding the rear seat back. Even the base engine will get a 70 down the road smartly while returning good fuel economy. A harmonic-rich hum (common to five-cylinder engines) is too muted to bother anyone, and wind and road noise are kept to a minimum.  improvements in ride and handling give the 70s broader appeal. Past versions have been criticized for ride quality judged too harsh by many testers; this was especially true of the high-performance versions. The 70s still ride firmly, but changes to springs and shock absorbers should mute the complaints. T5 drivers may want to avoid bad road surfaces, but the standard, gt and glt versions are noticeably more comfortable, if not yet as soft-riding as some competitors.  conversely, the softer suspension settings seem to have had no affect on handling. Both sedan and wagon are more nimble than their size might suggest, and take readily to fast driving on winding roads. Even in arctic weather conditions, the v70 awd felt safe and secure, picking its way over snow- and ice-covered roads with considerably more ease than its front-wheel drive counterparts, even when the latter were equipped with the optional tracs traction-control system. summarythe 850 was a very good car. The 70-series is better. Long the leader in automotive safety, volvos were popular among people with families. But along came minivans, sport-utility vehicles and pickups and they now account for nearly half of all sales.  unwilling to get into the sport-utility business, volvo has introduced the v70 xc awd. Xc is short for 'cross country' and is among a growing new breed of vehicles designed to blend the best features of passenger cars and sport-utilities.  volvo's v70 xc awd is based on a conventional volvo v70 station wagon, so it handles like a european sports sedan and comes loaded with an attractive interior and a range of luxurious options. A sophisticated all-wheel-drive (awd) system dramatically improves traction on wet and snowy roads. An increased ground clearance gives the xc better capability over backwoods trails.  in short, volvo's new xc wagon adds off-highway capability to volvo's legendary level of safety engineering, comfort and driving pleasure. After spending time driving this car down highways and rough unpaved roads, we think it more than exceeds the needs of most people. walkaroundimage has a lot to do with the huge popularity of sport-utility vehicles. Volvo engineers recognized that simply adding all-wheel drive to their superb v70 wagon wouldn't be enough to compete in the booming sport-utility market.  so they raised the xc body a bit to give it not only more ground clearance, but also a more macho appearance. The exterior is sportier, with an aggressive grille, front air dam and aggressive, gray body moldings unique to the xc. Fog lights are standard, as is the roof rack. Taller 205/65hr15 tires add to the xc's heightened stance compared to the more conventional v70 and v70 awd wagons.  drivers sit higher, giving them a more commanding view of the road, a big draw for suvs and other light trucks. 2012 volvo s60 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The 2012 s60 r-design, added to the lineup, does quite a bit more, in the areas of speed, handling and style, both exterior and interior.  the inline 6-cylinder s60 t6 awd has been selling very well since its introduction last year, including 40 percent to women over the years, according to volvo. Because it was all new for 2011, the s60 returns unchanged for 2012, but redesigned t5 and r-design models have joined the lineup.  the s60 r-design raises t6 horsepower from 300 to 325 hp, and torque from 325 foot-pounds to 354. This drops the 0-60 acceleration time from 5. 8 seconds to 5. 5. The sporty r-design has a sleeker nose, firmer suspension, 18-inch wheels, more seat bolstering, unique steering wheel, and racier instrumentation.  the five-cylinder t5 front-wheel-drive model returns after two years away, with an all-new engine making 250 hp, a 6-speed automatic (replacing a 5-speed), better fuel mileage and a lower price.  volvo suggests the s60 competes with the bmw 335i and audi a4. It's stylish, clean and sophisticated. Same with the interior, which features standard leather in the t6 and aluminum trim that looks like sculpture in some spots. The dashboard and center stack, with the optional 7-inch display screen, make the driver feel successful and in command.  the chassis delivers excellent handling. The 2011 s60 redesign got shorter, stiffer springs, firmer bushings, more travel in the shock absorbers, and a new steering column with faster steering ratio, using front macpherson struts and rear multi links. The s60-r pushes the limit of stiffness, but for volvo enthusiasts won't cross it.  the t6 engine is a 3. 0-liter turbocharged intercooled inline six-cylinder, making 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque at a low 2100 rpm. It's wonderfully smooth and quick when passing on two-lanes. It gets an epa-estimated 18 city and 26 highway miles per gallon. The pumped up s60-r gets the same fuel economy rating.  the new t5 engine is a 2. 5-liter inline five-cylinder, iron block with aluminum cylinder liners, intercooled turbocharger, making an impressive 250 horsepower with 266 foot-pounds of torque, plus a feature that gives 295 foot-pounds of torque for 10 seconds. Zero to 60 mph can be accomplished in 6. 8 seconds. Volvo estimates the t5 will get 20 city, 30 highway miles per gallon, and costs the 2012 s60 t5 costs thousands less than the prior model similarly equipped. The t5 uses a new 6-speed automatic. It's quite noticeable. We drove the s60 t6 on the track at oregon raceway park and the s60-r at thunderhill in california, and the s60-r clearly runs harder. For the track, it's a good thing the suspension is stiffer. Despite torque vectoring, it still understeers when cornered at the limit (meaning the front tires lose grip before the rear tires).  volvo has broken new ground in safety yet again. There's an optional system called pedestrian detection, which brings the car to a halt at any speed below 22 mph, without the driver's involvement, when a pedestrian is in the vehicle's path.  the s60 carries volvo's safe and secure warranty plan, with free scheduled maintenance for the first 5 years or 50,000 miles, including wear and tear coverage and roadside assistance. lineupthe 2012 volvo s60 t5 31,150) uses a new 2. 5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder engine making 250 hp, 6-speed automatic, and front-wheel drive. Standard equipment (includes all power, sport seats front and rear, leather-wrapped steering wheel, power driver seat, 7-inch color display, dual zone climate control, 160-watt 8-speaker cd/dvd/mp3 sound system, and bluetooth. The inlays, instrumentation, leather, pedals, steering wheel and shift lever are unique to the r, and the moonroof and power passenger seat are standard. The nose is sleeker with a different grille.  options include a climate package 800) with heated front seats, heated windshield washer nozzles, rain-sensor wipers, headlight washers and interior air quality system. The multimedia package 2700) includes 650-watt dolby surround sound 12-speaker audio system, navigation system, and split-lens rearview camera. The technology package 2100) includes pedestrian detection with full auto brake, adaptive cruise control, collision warning with full auto brake, distance alert, alert driver control, lane departure warning. Optional safety features include all-wheel drive, collision warning with full auto brake, pedestrian warning with full auto brake, distance alert, driver alert control, lane departure warning, and the blind spot warning system. walkaroundthe chief designer of the s60 says that his mission was to 'pump up the volume,' to make it look more like a coupe. Mission accomplished, we'd say. Great care went into the details, for example the symmetrical angles of the trapezoidal air intakes in the front fascia, two in the corners under the headlights, and the long horizontal intake at the bottom of the seamless nose. The headlights mirror those shapes, and the tidy grille is perfectly appropriate to the small size of the car's forward-leaning face. Small vertical trapezoidal led parking lights snuggle up against the grille.  there are no bulging fender flares, no strutting to flaunt horsepower. Smooth lines from the front fenders to rear, where the hips meet the graceful coupe roofline. The only chrome on the side of the car is a thin strip surrounding the windows and stating the grace of their outline. The standard t6 wheels are split seven-spokes, nice but we've seen better from volvo. interiorthe snug and comfortable leather seats in the volvo s60 t6 are gorgeous in beechwood brown. Some of the shapes inside, for example the trim on the doors could be metal sculpture. Shimmer graphite aluminum inlays, they call it, which sounds better than slightly shiny trim. Volvo did this thinking-out over many years of refining interior practicality. The instrumentation is clean and stylish like it's always been, the tach and speedo having a black background, white lettering, red needles and brushed metal rings. The headliner is a rich fabric.  at the rear, the trunk is a spacious 12 cubic feet, with enclosed hinges and a pass-through to the 60/40 rear seats. There are 2. 1 inches more rear legroom than the previous s60, with a longer wheelbase but the same overall length. But that's still only 33. 5 inches of rear legroom. So we had a nice big power moonroof to add airiness to the interior, 650-watt dolby surround sound with 12 speakers, rearview camera and navigation system, among quite a few other things. The rearview camera screen is the 7-inch navigation screen, and it's split, angled in the center to give a view off to the sides of the car.  the navigation system worked well. Safe, comfortable, versatile. introductionthe things that make a volvo a volvo just seem to work better in a vehicle designed for family-oriented, all-purpose transportation. The volvo xc90 is strong on safety, comfort and functionality, and we consider it one of the most successful vehicles volvo builds.  in the growing-family scheme, the xc90 has it all. Its styling is appealing, without shouting family-mobile. It seats up to seven passengers, with more cargo space than nearly all its competitors and features that allow quick, easy tailoring for cargo, gear or people. The xc90 is not the sportiest vehicle among luxury-class suvs, but it handles well on city streets and highways. It rides very comfortably and it's easy to park. It's smoother, more powerful and more sophisticated than the tried-and-true turbocharged five-cylinder it replaced, and delivers comparable epa mileage ratings the upgrade 311-hp v8 adds a bit of excitement for those who put a premium on quick acceleration.  in addition to the new base-level straight-six, volvo freshened the xc90 last year with a restyled grille, bumpers and lights. And last year's sport package has been promoted to a separate trim level.  volvo's fulltime all-wheel-drive system works smoothly in the daily grind without any penalty in epa fuel economy, and it's truly welcome when the weather gets foul or the road surface gets rough. Less obvious are features like a roof structure fashioned from high-strength steel, or a lower front crossmember engineered to inflict less damage on small vehicles if an accident occurs. Blis uses cameras to monitor an area measuring 10 feet by 31 feet on either side of the car, which is often not covered by the side mirrors, and reports the presence of another vehicle in the blind spots with a prominent warning light in the appropriate mirror.  standard safety features make the xc90 is one of the best equipped sport-utilities on the market. Standard safety features include dual-stage front impact and side-impact airbags for front passengers, and curtain type head protection airbags for all outboard seats. The xc90 was one the first suvs equipped with a rollover protection system, which senses an impending vehicle rollover, tightens the seatbelts and deploys the curtain airbags. If that sounds a bit ridiculous, allow us to explain. These include a new grille, bumpers and taillights, and the overall effect is actually a bit more conservative. In the rear-view mirror of cars ahead, this suv still looks a bit like an old convertible with its top puffing up in the air stream. Its hood is unusual among contemporary vehicles. Rather than the more familiar power bulge, the xc90 hood has a horse-shoe shaped crease with the area within that crease pressed lower than the surrounding edge. In other words, this bulge is reversed.  the overall angularity says volvo. In side view, the xc90's roofline rakes upward dramatically from the windshield to a high horizontal plane, with the arc of the top echoed by the curve of the roof rails. A high beltline enhances to the typical visual image of a tall suv, and creates the feeling of a protective cocoon inside. The rear glass is inclined toward the front of the vehicle, which shortens the roofline a bit and tidies the xc90's profile.    the xc90's basic stance gives it a well-planted look and promotes handling stability. Its wheelbase is long, but the overhangs are short, so the body doesn't extend very far past the wheels. It has a wide track as well. And despite its height, the xc90 has a lower center of gravity than many suvs.  the taillights may have been reshaped last year, but they remain as huge as ever. The idea, in volvo's safety scheme, is to reduce the chance of getting creamed from behind by some half-asleep driver. The same thinking applies to the back-up lights. They seem as bright as the roof lights on an a baja pickup, making it less likely to back into something at night.  two other exterior features may enhance safety. All xc90s feature side mirrors with integrated lcd turn signals to warn drivers.

We're not sure, but volvo calls its xc90 'the first suv with a conscience.' that's because the company's first sport-utility addresses the three conscience-testing suv issues. 1. It gets better gas mileage than most big suvs, and the five-cylinder xc90 has ultra-low (ulev) emissions. 2. It has a gyroscopic sensor that detects a possible impending rollover, activating a roll stability control system to apply braking and cut throttle to correct the imbalance. There's also a high-strength steel roof structure, just in case. 3. It has a unique low front chassis crossmember, about the same height as the bumper of a sedan, designed to inflict less damage on any vehicle or its occupants that the xc90 might strike. Clearly someone at volvo has noticed which way the political winds are blowing.  a totally new vehicle last year, the volvo xc90 looks like a cross between a volvo cross country wagon and a bmw x5. Unlike the bmw, volvo's suv seats seven, with a roomy, versatile interior that boasts more cargo space than the mercedes m-class, acura mdx and just about all the other vehicles in this class. For 2004, the xc90 gets a remote key fob that's also the key, with a retractable metal blade. A nice wooden steering wheel, leather shift lever and real aluminum trim are now optional. More aggressive wheel designs are intended to add character.  but a conscience? We'd call that line marketing. Suvs, including the xc90, are still heavier, with worse fuel mileage, than comparably sized wagons. And outside enthusiasts seem to go more for the xc70 cross country wagon. Yet volvo has kept the base price of the front-wheel-drive xc90 to a very reasonable level by limiting standard equipment, thus making the vehicle and its core strengths more affordable. Not that it's a stripper. The roll stability control, intended to virtually eliminate the possibility of a rollover, is standard. Volvo sells safety, and all xc90s have full-length, curtain-style head-protection airbags (the first suv so equipped, though others have followed). Other standard features include am/fm/cd stereo, fog lights, power driver's seat with memory, dual zone climate control, tinted windows and a trip computer.  electronically controlled all-wheel drive 1,775) is optional on the xc90 2. 5t. The popular premium package 2,575) includes leather seating, a power front passenger seat, mirror memory, a moonroof and in-dash six cd changer.  the xc90 awd t6 comes standard with all-wheel drive, as its name implies, and most of the equipment included in the base model's premium package. The t6 premium package 1,300) adds 18-inch wheels, power retractable side mirrors and a premium 300-watt stereo.  the versatility package 1,700) is what sets the xc90 apart from the average luxury suv. It includes the third row of seats and its accessories, starting with separate controls for the rear air conditioning unit and audio systems, as well as a built-in second-row child booster seat. The grouped options include a climate package 625) with heated front seats, headlight washers and rain-sensing wipers, and a security package 675) with infrared-heated windshield and laminated side glass.  stand-alone options include xenon headlamps 500), a vertical cargo net 300) to keep gear or pets in the back (volvo warns that a 60-pound dog flying forward at 30 mph weighs 2700 pounds), a reverse warning system 400), 18-inch alloy wheels 500), the integrated child booster cushion for the second-row seat 150) and the dolby 12-speaker sound system 775). The optional navigation system 1,995) is dvd based. walkaroundthe xc90's profile resembles that of a bmw x5, to the point where it almost looks like volvo was copying. A high beltline adds to the correct visual image of one tall suv.  the overall angularity clearly says volvo. The xc90 has the same general hood shape as the ram. The xc90 has a wide track, and despite its height, it has a lower center of gravity than the v70. This wide stance and low center of gravity promote handling stability.  like the v70, the back end of the xc90 features expansive taillights. The lower edge of the liftgate is waist level, leaving a small tailgate. It's also inclined toward the front of the vehicle, which shortens the roofline and makes the xc90 look shorter.  there are a lot of flat black and matt black composite pieces: bumpers, fender flares, cladding and assorted trim all the way up to the roof. But we think it detracts from the style and potential elegance of the vehicle.  the fit of body panels and trim is decent. The xc90's big doors close with a light touch and a nice solid sound when they latch. The rear window wiper is sturdy, protected by flat black plastic. interiorthe volvo xc90 is comfortable and can carry a lot of stuff. This allows the instrument panel and front seats to be positioned more forward, opening up space and legroom behind them. With the center second-row seat lowered, there is nine-and-a-half unobstructed feet between the instrument panel and the rear gate (even with the third-row seats in use, because there's a passage space between the seatbacks). Even with all three rows of seats in place there's room for two or three stacked duffel bags behind the third row.  seating and cargo arrangements in the seven-seater are enormously versatile, allowing 64 different configurations, including six of the seven seats folded flat.
