2011 honda odyssey review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's not an all-new model but clearly marks the next generation of one of america's favorite vans. These multipurpose vehicles aren't minivans anymore.  the odyssey is all about function and making the business that is family life easier. It can tow a small trailer or a couple of personal watercraft. It can carry 4x8-foot materiel flat on the floor, and it can carry 10-foot long objects like 2x4s or lighting tracks inside. It is loaded with conveniences to simplify things and can be loaded with distractions to quell intra-family disturbances.  for most uses, the odyssey makes a more logical, more compelling argument than a truck-based suv and many full-size crossovers. Six airbags including three-row side curtains, and electronic stability control are standard.  the new 2011 odyssey's primary competition is the recently redesigned toyota sienna. Chrysler's vans and the vw routan based on them are due for a redesign and are not fully competitive with odyssey or sienna top offerings. What were originally known as minivans have grown considerably and those shopping for a truly compact van should look at the very good three-row mazda5 or kia rondo. lineupall 2011 honda odyssey models use a 248-hp 3. 5-liter v6 engine, automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The only mechanical differences among them are wheels, tires and number of transmission speeds.  odyssey lx 27,800) seats seven on cloth upholstery and uses a 5-speed automatic transmission. Better aerodynamics positively affect both fuel economy and noise levels, and since vans don't do the high speeds of sports cars they don't need the added stability of wings and deep front spoilers.  van dimensions and a good deal of styling is dictated by the box-like architecture, so the odyssey is plus or minus within two inches of its competitors in every measure and honda has added a new element with a drop in the lower window line behind the sliding doors. They call it the lightning bolt look and, while it has nowhere near that shock value, it does break up the monotony and improves the view out from the third row.  the door handles are moved closer together and paired in a mild recess, loosely reminding one of the fixtures on a rolls-royce with rear-hinged rear doors. New for 2011, the power sliding doors can be opened with the brakes on, without having to shift to park first, which better matches the way we live (though we recommend shifting into park). As is often the case on vans the trim piece below the third-row window and above the sliding door track may not exactly match the color on the fender below it over time, and darker colors hide that track better than lighter colors.  up front, a new grille and lighting for 2011 appear to be a cross between honda's insight and civic and toyota's sienna. Here again, van shapes and function conspire to limit daring, as does the somewhat mundane mission of most vans. The odyssey's shape is not unpleasant by any means, it just comes across as nondescript rather than bold.  at the rear the roofline echoes that of sister-brand acura's mdx or mercedes' r-class, much like a tent pulled taut over a stake. Taillights use clear-lens signals with amber bulbs for some visual pop without the expense of led lamps. A spoiler atop the hatch is standard on all, and the power tailgate (ex-l and above) has pinch-protection in both directions and can now be opened with the remote without first unlocking the van. They also use a laminated windshield to minimize wind noise. interiorhonda has set up the 2011 odyssey to carry seven (lx) to eight people (everything else) in total or six adults more comfortably than any suv right up to cadillac's long-wheelbase escalade. Center vents frame all the climate controls, including a sync button to match all the zones; the rear-seat climate controls are overhead where it's nearly impossible to spill anything on them. Audio/entertainment input is below that, and the lowest controls (still an easy reach for driver or passenger) are those for the navigation and car systems. Some taller drivers may find the shift lever housing an uncomfortable place to rest their right leg. The view outward is very good with moderate size pillars and low-profile headrests. The drop-down video screens take away some rear vision but not all of it; eight passengers will be more of an issue because the center shoulder belts anchor in the roof on opposite sides. Top-line models have parking sensors, multi-view rear camera and blind-spot warning, but we had no issues with blind spots.  second-row seats ha. 2005 honda element review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The perfect accessory for beach parties. introductionthe honda element is the versatile box of motor vehicles, combining unique and practical features with a kind of military/utilitarian chic. Element provides all that. Its seats are designed to get wet. Inside and out, it looks like a little truck. But it's built with components from the honda civic, so it drives more like a car than a truck-based suv.  the element was all-new for 2003. Honda has made few changes since then. Models with all-wheel drive feature a large rear skylight that tilts open or removes completely and stores inside the vehicle.  the 2005 honda element comes in two trim levels, lx and ex. Silver ex models are accented by blue cladding and trim, while red and magnesium ex models feature black trim.  safety features on all elements include front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters to reduce the chance of belt-related injuries. The element earned a five-star rating for both driver and front-seat passenger in the federal (nhtsa) frontal crash test. As mentioned, 2005 ex models include abs and front-seat side-impact airbags, the latter designed to protect driver and front-passenger's torsos. Curtain airbags, designed for head protection in a side impact or rollover, are not available. walkaroundthe honda element is one funky looking car. For one thing, the front fascia, front and rear fenders, and rocker panels are all made of a scratch- and dent-resistant composite molded in dark gray (though a few ex models get color-coordinated trim).  from the front, the element has a cheeky, chunky look accentuated by rectangular headlights and the unusual design of the bumper. The side of the vehicle has a distinct shape unlike any other on american roads. The hood line is fairly low and leads to a steep windshield flowing into a gently curved roofline; while the rear tailgate is nearly vertical.  that tailgate is split horizontally so that the lower half can be used as a seating surface for parties. The element's rear corners are nicely curved, so it does not look as chunky from behind. Large 16-inch wheels help ensure the element doesn't look like a minivan. interiorthe honda element has lots of room for passengers and cargo, with a flexible interior designed to handle all combinations of people and stuff. The front seat area provides acres of headroom, and there's no center tunnel between the front seats to get in the way.  the rear seats are roomy as well. They're raised off the floor a couple of inches higher than the front seats, giving back-seat passengers better visibility over the front seats. However, we found rear-seat passengers complained about not being able to see signs and buildings; they have to stoop to see out the windshield. This makes the element a poor choice for taking a group sightseeing.  one of the most talked-about features of the element is its pillarless, rear-hinged back doors. With no b-pillars to get in the way, there's easy access to the rear seating area. For safety reasons, however, the rear side doors cannot be opened unless the front door has been opened first. Likewise, the rear doors have to be closed before the front side doors can be closed. This design results in a shuffle whenever dropping off back-seat passengers because the front-seat occupants have to unbuckle their seatbelts and open their doors to let rear passengers in or out. The center-opening doors allow easy loading of bulky objects without having a pillar to get in the way. The rear seats fold down easily, and can be swung up to the side, leaving an uninterrupted flat floor space. The front passenger seatback can be folded forward to make room for a 10-foot surfboard, which would still leave room for the driver and one passenger behind the driver: two surfers, two surfboards, in other words. All the seats, including the driver's, can be folded back to make a large, albeit uncomfortable, double bed. When parked, the element can be set up to serve as a giant locker for outdoor gear, a truly great feature. The front seats are coated in a waterproof material designed for easy cleaning as well. The rear seats are covered with the same material on lx and ex models.  storage areas abound. The backs of the front seats have large storage pockets. Cup holders can be found on the backs of folded seats. The element should be good for tailgate parties.  up front, the dashboard reflects the simple design of the element. The gauges are contained in three deep pods, shielding them from the sun. Climate and radio controls are well placed. The ex provides an auxiliary jack for digital media, such as an apple ipod, so the stored music can be played back directly through the element's sound system. We didn't find the automatic transmission to be as much fun as the manual.  element is a front-wheel-drive vehicle so there is a touch of torque steer, that tugging of the steering wheel under hard acceleration, but it isn't a concern. A bigger issue was wheelspin in the wet. Step on the gas, and it's easy to spin the front wheels on front-wheel-drive models, particularly in the rain. All-wheel drive cures this.  the ride quality is bouncy. From an engineering standpoint, the honda element is basically a re-bodied cr-v; and the cr-v is built on the same platform as the honda civic. The element has a slightly wider track than the cr-v, which helps it handle curves better than we expected of such a tall vehicle. Speaking of tall, the ground clearance and ride height are sufficient for primitive roads, but the element is not an off-road vehicle by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it supposed to be.  xm satellite radio is available and can be a great companion on long trips, delivering cd-quality sound nearly everywhere. Not having to change stations on a cross-country trip has distinct advantages. Finding stations is made easier with rds (radio data system), which identifies programming on the radio's display. (xm requires a subscription fee, which starts at about $10 per month.). summarythe honda element is a compelling option for drivers who want a genuine utility vehicle that behaves like a car. Its versatile interior makes the element quite handy in certain situations, with its easy access and flat floor that's easy to clean. Looks are part of the attraction here. We liked it and found it appeals to people of all ages.  new car test drive correspondent john rettie is based in santa barbara, california; with editor mitch mccullough reporting from redondo beach. model lineuphonda element lx 2wd 17,450); lx 4wd 18,850); ex 2wd 19,525); ex 4wd 20,925). assembled ineast liberty, ohio. options as testednone. model testedhonda element ex 2wd 19,525). 2010 honda pilot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Terrific mid-size crossover suv. introductionthe honda pilot is a mid-size suv, a crossover that uses carlike unit-body construction and suspension for better fuel economy and handling. And with six cupholders in the second row alone, eight door cargo pockets and the ability to carry a 4x8-foot sheet of building material flat inside, finding a place for everything isn't an issue.  the majority of pilots are all-wheel-drive models that allow another 1000 pounds in tow rating and provide better acceleration and climbing in snow. However, with the same tires and brakes, they don't stop or change direction any better than the front-drive version. Each model is offered with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive (4wd). All mechanical and safety components and systems are identical across the range. Pilot lx 4wd 29,495) adds the real time 4wd system.  pilot ex 30,745) upgrades with three-zone climate control, alloy wheels, security system, heated body-color mirrors, roof rails, fog lights, chrome exhaust tips, homelink, conversation mirror, eight-way power driver seat, xm radio, and exterior temperature indicator. A rear-seat dvd system with 115-volt ac outlet is available 35,445). Rear-seat entertainment is optional, but treated as a separate model 38,645). Surfaces that aren't sloped inward at the roof pay dividends in head space and big-box cargo loading, and the three inches of extra length have gone between the axles and into the cabin.  with substantial chrome trim and eyebrows in the headlight housings, fog lights much higher in the bumper, and a hatch that tapers more to the sides than forward at the top, the pilot looks wider it is. Viewed from dead astern the mid-size pilot appears as bulky as the full-size toyota sequoia.  panel crimps define the wheel openings, aiding the rugged look without adding width or bolt-on parts that might promote rust. The third-row side window has been separated by a thick chunk of sheetmetal, to no apparent detriment in driver vision or third-row comfort. The top tow rating remains 4500 pounds on 4wd and 3500 pounds on front-drive models, but the 4500 is no longer limited to boats or low-profile trailers. As a result, they differ dramatically in use. interiorregardless of trim level, the honda pilot interior appears well thought out and assembled, with functional touches at every turn and a luxury factor that increases alongside price. The cloth is a subdued design with just enough pattern to hide stains that become part and parcel of any eight-seat vehicle. One may desire more features from higher-priced models yet the basics are all here, including power windows and locks and air conditioning for front and rear. Just like the priciest pilot, door armrests have soft cushioned elbow pads and there's no cheap feel in frequently felt surfaces. This seat split-folds 60/40 with the short cushion on the right side for easiest loading, both sides slide fore and aft for maximum flexibility or keeping that baby seat closer, the climate control is handy at the back of the console, and each door has two cupholders in the armrest and dual pockets below. Although it appears as merely a fixed cushion above the center armrest, the center headrest easily lifts and extends to a useful height.  the third row is easily accessible: one lift of the lever at kid's-eye height in the center row backrest tilts the seat and slides it forward for third-row access. The optional rear-seat entertainment system is much the same as the top-ranked setups in the odyssey and acura mdx.  at least in lx and ex trims this is a jump-in-and-go kind of ride. 2003 honda pilot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy new suv goes straight to the head of the class. introductionhonda took its own sweet time getting its first family-size suv on the market, but a couple of minutes behind the wheel of the 2003 honda pilot makes it clear that every moment was well spent.  the all-new pilot brings honda virtues to a new class of vehicle. The interior packs eight seats into an overall package so short that the epa considers the pilot a compact suv. However, its competition will be the world's midsize suvs. Prices do not include a $460 destination and handling charge. walkaroundthe honda pilot gracefully borrows key styling cues from honda's smaller cr-v sport-utility. The grille and headlights are a careful enlargement of the cr-v's fluid wraparound face, while the body-color moldings give the pilot a more refined and upscale look.  the wheel arches are just aggressive enough to offset any impression this is a toy truck, but subtle enough to be consistent with the pilot's likely hangouts in upscale neighborhoods and parking lots. Large honda badges on the grille and liftgate make it clear that honda is proud of the pilot, and expects customers to feel the same way. interiorthe honda pilot packs an amazingly large amount of interior room into its small overall package. Both rows of rear seats split 60/40 to fold. That compares to 80. 1 cubic feet in the gmc envoy, 81. 3 in the ford explorer, and 81. 4 for the toyota highlander, all with the seats folded down.  the pilot's front seat is spacious, with two comfortable bucket seats and a versatile center console. The seats give excellent access to all the controls. In a particularly clever move, the largest dial in the center of the instrument panel is the switch to shift the audio controls from front- to rear-seat audio. Unfortunately, this was the only interior feature that did not seem to be fully thought out. Whenever the cell-phone holder was in use, it completely blocked the two cupholders mounted in front of it in the console. However, the console provides plenty of storage space, with a compartment behind the cell-phone holder (where my cell phone actually ended up most of the time), and a covered compartment located on the pilot's centerline provided more storage in the space between the console and the instrument panel.  the other instruments and controls will be familiar to anyone who has ever driven a honda. Like the mdx and odyssey, the pilot is a joy in daily use. Everything about the way the suv behaves on the road feels just a little better than was necessary to beat the competition.  the 240-horsepower 3. 5-liter v6 is more than adequate to propel the pilot. (curb weight is 4416 pounds for lx, 4439 pounds for ex.) acceleration performance is excellent, particularly in the 40-60 mph passing range that matters most in a quick run to the grocery store or when running late on the way to soccer practice. The pilot outguns the v6-powered toyota highlander by 20 horsepower. More important, the engine produces 245 pounds-feet of torque from 3000 rpm to 5000 rpm. That compares to 222 pounds-feet at 4400 rpm for the v6 highlander. Gm's midsize suvs, the chevrolet trailblazer, gmc envoy and oldsmobile bravada, offer a 4. 2-liter straight-six producing 270 horsepower and 275 pounds-feet of torque, but those truck-based suvs are about 200 pounds heavier than the pilot.  the automatic transmission shifts smoothly and precisely, even under hard acceleration. The five-speed electronically controlled automatic benefits from honda's electronic grade logic control system, which monitors throttle position, speed and acceleration to avoid hunting between gears. The steering wheel returns to center comfortably and intuitively for maneuvers in parking lots and tight driveways.  ride and handling compares well to the best midsize cars. It is stable at highway speeds, nimble in parking lots, and sufficiently well-damped to run over winter-buckled and pothole-laden urban streets without discomfiting its passengers. The steering wheel transmits road conditions enough to keep the driver informed without jerking the wheel at every pavement disruption. Passengers in the second-row seats found the ride equally comfortable, but the third row suffered somewhat from being right over the rear wheels.  unlike many suvs, the pilot has enough sound insulation to prevent bumps in the road from being transmitted to the interior as noise. Given their cavernous interiors, it's not uncommon for suvs to become booming echo chambers on rough roads. Even on michigan's notoriously ragged freeways, the pilot's interior remained quiet enough to carry on a normal conversation.  the pilot felt stable and secure in simulated emergency maneuvers carried out in an empty parking lot. The suspension behaved with aplomb under both hard braking and acceleration. The nose does not dive overmuch on sudden deceleration, nor does the pilot squat back on its haunches in a fast start.  the anti-lock brakes (abs) performed equally well in simulated panic stops. The brake response is linear, and smooth, providing a reassuring feeling of control even under maximum braking. Pedal feedback from the abs was minimal, removing one possible distraction that a driver really doesn't need in an emergency. The electronic brake distribution system (ebd), designed to reduce braking distances, performed transparently, as it should. Honda expects to sell 80,000 pilots a year. In a world where many suvs take up far more space than their utility justifies, and drink far more gas than their performance merits, the pilot is a breath of fresh air. model lineuplx 27,360) (yf1813ew); ex 29,730) (yf1843ew). assembled inalliston, ontario, canada. options as testedleather seats, rear-seat dvd entertainment system. model testedhonda pilot ex 29,730) (yf1843ew).

2008 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Broad line of superb compacts. introductionthe honda civic holds its position at the top of this highly competitive class, with innovative styling, segment-leading refinement, and a broad model line that ranges from eco-friendly to sport-compact racy.  the civic is comfortable and affords the driver outstanding outward visibility. It comes standard with side-impact airbags and other safety features that are optional on competitive models.  the 2008 lineup includes a new leather-upholstered ex-l model and a hot mugen si sedan, with high-performance suspension, forged aluminum wheels, aerodynamic body styling, and a sport-tuned exhaust.  civic was last restyled and reengineered for 2006, and the sporty si coupe was reintroduced at the same time. The hybrid features dramatically reduced emissions, and it delivers an epa-rated 40/45 mpg city/highway, second only to the toyota prius.  a natural gas-powered civic, the gx sedan, is available to residents of california and new york, but can also be found in fleets there and elsewhere. lineupthe 2008 honda civic is available in coupe and sedan versions. A five-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the honda civic dx coupe 14,810) and sedan 15,010) are the base models. Standard equipment is confined to power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and fold-down rear seatback. The coupe gets a rear decklid spoiler. Brakes are disc in front, drum in rear. P195/65r15 tires wrap around steel wheels with full-cover hubcaps.  the civic lx coupe 16,760) and sedan 16,960) add air conditioning; cruise control with steering-wheel-mounted controls; power door locks with keyless entry; center console with sliding armrest; overhead map lights; and express up/down for the driver's power window; p205/55r16 tires on steel wheels with covers. The coupe has six speakers and a rear-seat walk-in feature that remembers the front passenger seat's setting.  the civic ex coupe and sedan 18,710) add power moonroof; variable-speed windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; and outside temperature indicator. The keyless remote adds a trunk release button. They come only with a six-speed manual transmission. Other go-fast goodies include a limited-slip differential, sport suspension, electronic vehicle stability assist system with traction control, and p215/45r17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. Inside are synthetic suede sport seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; 350-watt stereo. Packages include high-performance p215/45zr17 tires for the coupe 21,310) and sedan 21,510); xm and navigation 22,860 and $23,060); or with all of the above 23,060 and $23,260).  new for 2008 is the mugen si sedan 29,500), which includes sports suspension, forged aluminum 18-inch lightweight alloy wheels, a full aerodynamic body kit with an adjustable rear wing and diffuser, and a sport-tuned exhaust.  the civic hybrid sedan 22,600) features a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt), automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. The hybrid is also available with the navigation system and xm satellite radio 24,350).  the civic gx 24,590) is essentially an lx sedan with a 1. 8-liter engine powered by natural gas. It comes only with a five-speed manual transmission. It comes with an auxiliary audio input jack for 2008. walkaroundthe honda civic sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. Details and markings distinguish each trim level.    a bright horizontal bar, with a prominent honda h in the middle, dominates the sedan's grille. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille is more delicate, with the honda logo suspended in a two-tier frame. The central lower air intake opens between two geometric side recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps. Even more so than with the sedan, the coupe front end pushes the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the wide track (the distance side to side between the tires).  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the sail panel (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model. The coupe's forms an acute angle with the horizontal deck surface, emphasizing the two-door body style; while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail end add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top.  the si sedan and coupe have another grille variation with a body-color bar on top and a black bar underneath; an understated si badge is tucked away to the far right. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. Both feature subtle body cladding.  the mugen si is more extroverted, distinguished immediately by its bi-plane rear spoiler and aggressive aero extensions all around the lower body and a diffuser in the rear bumper. Up front is an all-black version of the si grille that looks weirdly like parted lips wearing goth-black lipstick; a mugen badge beckons from the upper right lip. Businesslike 18-inch, seven-spoke wheels, open in design to show off the brake calipers, complete the mugen ensemble. Honda promises to limit production to a maximum of 1000 for the model year, all painted fiji blue pearl.  the hybrid, in contrast, is understated, with just a small 'hybrid' badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  seats are comfortable, not plush. The fabric upholstery feels durable, and its robust nap assists the modest side and bottom bolsters in restraining occupants during spirited motoring. Seat bottoms provide better than average thigh support. The manual height adjustment on the driver's seat pivots on front hinges, forcing drivers to choose between seat height and legroom. The si and mugen models get sport front seats with synthetic suede upholstery and more aggressive bolsters both bottom and side for improved support.  the view out the front, with the expansive windshield, low cowl and sloping hood, is unparalleled in the class. A commensurately low beltline would enhance side vision, but otherwise there's little about which to complain. Tiny front quarter windows on the sedan, necessary to allow the front door windows to roll all the way down, push the side view mirrors a bit too far rearward for quick and easy glances at neighboring lanes.  controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Despite the seeming logic of the two-tier instru.
