2004 toyota prius review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It's also the most fuel-efficient five-passenger car sold in america, rated at 60/51 mpg city/highway by the epa.  the prius is a gasoline/electric hybrid. Unlike electric cars, it does not need to be plugged in. A small, highly efficient keeps its battery charged, giving it mind-boggling driving range and the freedom to operate where and as any normal car would. No special knowledge or skills are needed to operate it. The only thing even remotely close is the honda civic hybrid, though ford will soon introduce a hybrid-powered escape.  the new prius is larger than before, moving it up from the compact to midsize class. It's roomy, with back seats that seat two adults and lots of cargo space. The fabric upholstery is as good as it gets. It's also more pleasant to look at with futuristic styling that attracts attention. Automatic, micron-filter air conditioning is standard, as are power windows, door locks and heated outside mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and a six-speaker am/fm/cd stereo.  antilock brakes are standard, augmented by electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, and traction control. Standard safety features comprise multi-stage, dual front airbags and three-point seatbelts and head restraints at all five seating positions; rear seat head restraints are adjustable. Seat-mounted side-impact airbags for driver and front-passenger and side curtain airbags for both front and rear passengers are optional 650), and strongly recommended.  other options include an intermittent rear window wiper 180). A package adds the side-impact and curtain airbags, a keyless entry and start system, vehicle stability control, fog lamps and self-leveling hid headlamps 2,255). The ultimate package has everything, including voice-recognition navigation system with bluetooth capability, homelink programmable remote transmitter, premium jbl am/fm/cassette/6-cd nine-speaker sound system, and immobilizing security alarm 5,245). Dealer accessories include floor and cargo mats 184), cargo net 49), first aid kit 29), rear bumper applique 65) and wheel locks 59). walkaroundif plain and simple equates with beauty, the new toyota prius is a contender for the prettiest car of the year. If it doesn't, then the 2004 model is best described as still looking different, just not as different.  the pinched-down nose returns, helpful for knifing through the air with little resistance. But now it looks more like the front end of a car than the flattened-nostrils look on the 2003 prius. The front quarter panels and doors are sleek and clean, sans the 03's deeply etched groove arcing up and over the front tire opening and fading to nothingness somewhere around mid-front door. The new car's rear flanks continue the theme, with no hint of the bulbous, bi-level blister running rearward from the back doors over the top of the rear tire arch on the '03. The 03's flow-through ventilation exhaust vents are gone, leaving a clean, smooth rear sail. The '04's sole character line is a tasteful indentation in the lower region of the doors, visually connecting the creases marking the lower limits of the working area of the front and rear bumpers.  the side view makes clear the stylists' devotion to aerodynamics. A steeply raked windshield carries rearward the hood's acute angle to the horizontal. An even more steeply raked backlight (rear windscreen) ends in a high spoiler that breaks up the air flow as it leaves the car to reduce the drag the tallish, almost-vertical backend would otherwise generate. Front and rear quarter windows do more to visually enhance the car's aero-look than for outward visibility.  pictures deceive when it comes to tires. Viewed in the paint, the '04 prius looks under-tired, almost as if the tires were left out when the rest of the car was made larger. This may have been in part in deference to the quest for maximum fuel economy, but visually it clashes with the car's enlarged proportions.  the headlights are geometrically complex, compound units, housing the running lights, side marker lights and turn indicators. Vertically stacked, compound taillight units wear modish clear lenses and bookend the lower section of the liftgate. Integrated into the liftgate, and running its width beneath the rear spoiler, is a strip of glass adding critical rearward visibility to the view from the driver's seat.  while the 2003 model was classified a compact by the epa, the 2004 prius is considered a mid-size car. Its wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels) is about 6 inches longer than before, yielding more legroom. interiorthe interior of the 2004 prius is significantly roomier than the 2003 model. Passenger room measures 96. 2 cubic feet, up more than 6 cubic feet from the 2003 prius. It's nearly 5 cubic feet roomier than the 2004 civic hybrid's interior.  the back seats are surprisingly roomy. The 2004 prius gains a whopping 3 inches of rear legroom over the 2003 model. In all but one dimension, the 2004 prius betters its predecessor; only rear seat headroom stays the same, at 37. 1 inches. It's five-passenger in designation only, or when one of the rear seat occupants is much smaller statured than the other two.  cargo space is 16. 1 cubic feet, more than one-third larger than the 2003's 11. 8 cubic feet and half again the civic's 10. 1 cubic feet and coming perilously close to the camry's 16. 7 cubic feet. The cloth upholstery looks durable and is grippy, compensating somewhat for the minimalist bottom and back side bolsters. Head restraints are adjustable in all five seating positions, although in their lowered positions, the rear seat's are close to dysfunctional for taller passengers. The interior finish is up to toyota standards, with pleasingly close tolerances between body panels and interior plastic pieces, and plastics that look and feel better than the word plastic connotates.  the speedometer, fuel gauge, trip meter, and transmission selection indicator are tucked into a long and flat, eyebrow-like opening draped across and centered on the top of the dash where it meets the windshield. In a nod to the car's left-hand drive configuration, these are located in the left half of the opening, albeit more toward the centerline of the car than that of the driver.  the climate controls are managed via an lcd positioned top-most in the center stack. This same panel displays user preferences and maintenance needs and intervals. It also allows tracking of the power and re-charging flows, monitoring battery and gasoline usage, which is entertaining. It also serves as the focal point for the navigation system, if ordered.  directly beneath the lcd is the control head for the sound system. Toyota deserves high praise for keeping the stereo's most-used functions outside the onboard computer system labyrinth and, equally important, for giving it buttons and knobs that are easy to see, read and use. The base am/fm/cd 6-speaker sound system is quite capable, while enjoying the premium, jbl system to its fullest would benefit from a bit more sound deadening in the floorpan and doors.  remote switches for the audio, climate and cruise controls are conveniently mounted on the tilt steering wheel. There are two accessory power outlets. Dome lights grace the headliner, front and rear. Both sun visors have illuminated mirrors. These may seem small matters, but they distinguish between value and cheap.  a tall glasshouse yields exemplary outward visibility, with one exception: even a 6-foot tall driver can't see the front of the car or the hood without leaning forward. This is not good for navigating tight spaces or congested traffic, precisely where the prius is likely to spend goodly amounts of its time. But that's the trend for many of the latest aerodynamic designs.  storage spaces are abundant and more flexible than in some cars costing much more than the prius. The glove box is a two-parter, with an upper and lower bin opening like a clamshell. The upper compartment is good for, yes, gloves and long, narrow items. The lower compartment holds bulkier items. The front part of the center console opens up, also clamshell-like, into two cup holders. driving impressionif past is predictive, people who buy a hybrid-powered car aren't looking for something that's fun to drive as much as they are wanting to make a statement about efficient, reasonably cost-effective personal transportation and eco-conscientiousness. The 2004 toyota prius easily satisfies the latter wants without boring the driver.  the environmental protecti. 2006 mazda mazda6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty and fun. introductionimproved for 2006, the mazda 6 is the sports sedan of front-drive midsize cars. While the toyota camry and honda accord are designed for mass appeal or, stated more cynically, for people who don't like cars, the mazda 6 is designed for the driving enthusiast. Mazda6, as the company calls it, is not for everyone, and that's just fine with mazda.  the mazda 6 looks leaner than its competitors and the driving experience backs that up with agile handling and responsive engines. The mazda 6 feels tighter in corners and holds the road better than camry, accord or nissan altima. It's lighter on its feet and stops quicker. In short, it's a better driver's car. The 5-door excels at carrying cargo, yet it doesn't look like a hatchback; in fact, it takes a sharp eye to distinguish it from the sedan. Mild styling revisions give it a cleaner look. New front seats are designed for greater comfort and support, new cloth fabrics, a new center console, new door panels, and other features make the cabin more comfortable and more convenient. The brakes have been upgraded for 2006 with bigger ventilated front disc brakes designed to reduce stopping distances, resist brake fade and improve pedal feel. Also, 18-inch wheels and tires are available.  the new 2006 mazdaspeed6 is a turbocharged, all-wheel-drive sedan carefully tuned by mazda's performance division. All-wheel drive helps tame its 274-horsepower turbocharged engine, its close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox is remarkable for its easy, smooth-shifting action, and its suspension is firm but not unbearably so. It comes with sporty fabric or leather upholstery and other luxury features. Several levels of trim are available. All mazda 6 models are well equipped.  the 6i sedan 19,110) comes standard with air conditioning; cruise control; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; tilt and telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel; leather wrapped shift knob; power windows, mirrors and door locks with remote keyless entry; and 16-inch steel wheels. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; a five-speed automatic 900) is optional. A convenience package 1,000) adds an eight-way power driver's seat with manual lumbar, 17-inch alloy wheels with p215/50r17 all-season tires, and an anti-theft alarm.  safety features that come standard on all models include abs, traction control, and advanced dual-stage front airbags. Side-impact and side-curtain airbags 500) are optional.  moving up to the 6i sport sedan 21,810) and 6i sport hatchback 22,210) adds the front side-impact and side-curtain airbags, the eight-way power driver's seat, fog lights, bright-tip exhaust outlets, side-sill extensions and a wing-type rear spoiler. Wheels and tires upgrade to p215/50vr17 on 17-inch aluminum rims. The sport bits are dropped, but are available as options.  the mazda 6s models are identically equipped to their 6i counterparts, except they come with the v6 engine. This goes for the 6s sedan 23,010) and 6s wagon 23,610); 6s sport sedan 23,910), 6s sport hatchback 24,510), and 6s sport wagon 24,610). The standard transmission is a five-speed manual; a six-speed automatic is optional 950). A six-speed manual transmission, electronically controlled all-wheel drive, electronic stability control, and enhanced brakes and suspension complete the package. Both come with the bose audio.  options for all mazda 6 models include a navigation system 2,000), an in-dash 6cd player 500), a cassette player 200), and a long list of accessories. walkaroundthe mazda 6 is the sportiest of the midsize sedans. Visually, it has more personality than the accord and other midsize cars. It has a strong front-end treatment that's consistent with other mazdas. Cat's-eye headlamps and big, multi-element tail lamps enhance the action at each corner of the car.  the mazda 6 benefits from a kind of muscular conservatism inside and out. Everything in, on and under this car makes sense, and it all looks good doing it. The relationship of the lower body to the upper body looks perfect, yet the roof shape is designed for people, not for style. Its sporty profile makes the mazda 6 look smaller than it is.  2006 brings some styling revisions to the mazda 6 line. New headlamps, revised tail lamps, new front and rear bumper fascia, and new side sills add more edge to the styling. Fog lamps are incorporated into the front spoiler. A new sport grille, dark gray headlamp bezels, and a rear spoiler add distinction for top-line models. Also, 18-inch wheels have been added to the options list. Bright island blue and tungsten gray have been added to the color palette for 2006, and we really liked the new dark cherry, which will be mistaken for black in some lighting conditions.  the shape of the mazda 6 is truly fetching when painted a hot color and accented by sport-level trim, which includes a body-color front grille, gray headlight bezels, clear-lens halogen fog lamps, dual oval exhaust outlets, front and rear air dams, and side sill extensions. The outside door handles are well designed and easy to grab.  the 5-door hatchback features an extended rear roof pillar sloping rearward into a raised deck lid. As mazda says, it looks fast even when standing still. Casual observers may not notice the difference between the 5-door and the sedan.  the sport wagon looks sleek, clean and aggressive, if not as overtly sporty as the hatchback.  the new mazdaspeed6 is distinguished by its slightly lowered stance and by its exclusive front fenders, hood, and grille, among other body panels. An aerodynamic front bumper and lower grille section hint at high performance, while flared side skirts draw attention to 18-inch aluminum wheels. The wagon has a stiffer chassis than the 5-door due to the large rear opening of the hatchback. A stiff chassis is a key element to achieving sharp handling and a smooth ride. interiorthe front seats of the mazda 6 are comfortable through a wide range of adjustments and have been improved for 2006. We found them suitable for hard driving, with good upper body support and enough lower back support with the optional lumbar adjuster for all-day comfort. The leather package adds cowhide to all the right places, with thankful perforations on the seating surfaces.  the mazda 6 interior is designed to be comfortable for front and rear passengers in the 95th percentile of all body shapes. The rear seats are quite comfortable, whether in the sedan, hatchback or wagon. 2007 pontiac g6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The coupe is comfortable and sporty. A panoramic roof is available on sedans, with panels that slide rearward creating a sunroof large enough for the back seat riders to enjoy an open-air experience.  new for 2007, the gtp sedan features a 3. 6-liter v6 with variable valve timing and a six-speed automatic transmission. Hydraulic power steering is standard on all gt models, and head curtain side-impact airbags are standard on g6 sedan and coupe. G6 also gets 17-inch five-spoke, high-vent wheels for 2007, and a standard interior rearview electrochromic mirror with compass display. New exterior color options for 2007 include blue-gold crystal metallic and dark gray steel metallic.  the mission of the pontiac g6 is to beat the honda accord, nissan altima and mazda6 on value, a proposition bolstered by lower prices. While the g6 doesn't offer the refinement or attention to detail of its japanese rivals, it's an alternative worth considering for shoppers in the mid-size car market. Standard features on the special value model 17,245) include air conditioning, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, am/fm/cd player, variable intermittent wipers, tachometer, theft-deterrent system, and 16-inch steel wheels with 215/60r16 tires. The base model 18,800) adds cruise control, remote keyless entry and 17-inch steel wheels with 225/50r17 tires.  the gt sedan 22,380), gt coupe 22,150), and gt convertible 28,750) come standard with a 3. 5-liter v6, abs, and 17-inch wheels and tires. Option packages are available to personalize the car.  safety features that come on all models include driver and passenger front airbags (the passenger side airbag features occupant detection) and seatbelts with pretensioners. New standard safety features for 2007 are side-impact air bags and head curtain airbags for g6 sedan and coupe models. Anti-lock brakes packaged with traction control are standard on gt and gtp models (optional on base models). Basic traction assist is available on the base model, full-spectrum traction control on the gt, and traction control with the gm/delphi stabilitrak chassis control system will be available on the gtp. Onstar 695) is an excellent safety feature for its ability to summon help. We recommend opting for all this stuff. walkaroundthe pontiac g6 models are attractive cars. They have the smooth styling of the latest-generation pontiacs, sharing cues with the solstice roadster and other models and sort of a lexus/toyota look from the rear. In fact, the g6 led this latest pontiac styling revolution. Its clean, uncluttered lines are quite pleasing.  instead of side cladding, there is a single spear running down the sides of the g6 with an optional delicately integrated spoiler lip on the trailing edge of the decklid.  gtp models look similar to the gts, but with a spoiler and chrome exhaust tips. The base version has almost no decoration at all, and is relatively dull-looking.  the coupe and convertible inject a little more excitement into the styling. The two share the same sleek profile, although the roof on the coupe looks much better integrated (for obvious reasons). The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, both cars feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid that looks similar to the toyota solara coupe and convertible. We think it's an improvement over the blander styling of the sedan.  the pontiac g6 is built in michigan on gm's international epsilon platform, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu.  all g6 models use the long wheelbase version of the epsilon platform (like the malibu maxx), which gives them ride and handling finesse, with a structural stiffness that helps the g6 achieve a 27. 3 hz bending frequency, a big number that ranks with most luxury cars. Pontiac says the car is designed with three major torque rings that add stiffness and strength without taking up too much space or adding weight. In addition to the torque rings, the g6 structure also uses high-strength steel for about 60 percent of underbody components and central tunnel. Rather than just a single layer of sheet steel, the tunnel has an extra piece of steel welded between it and the floor pan. The stiff body uses fully isolated front and rear subframes to carry the heavy stuff, and the front one is hydroformed for strength and light weight.  these measures can be experienced in the smooth ride and sharp handling of the g6. interiorthe pontiac g6 has a nice interior with attractive fabrics and comfortable bucket seats. At first, it has that tank-like pontiac feeling of sitting down low in the cockpit, but that feeling goes away with a little familiarity and the g6 becomes a happy companion. The cabin is altogether different from the old soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of older pontiacs. It's much more modern, more european.  the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and body retention in high-speed maneuvers, and they are very comfortable and thickly padded.  rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. Those with tall friends or family may want to remember that the panoramic sunroof is powered by a motor that takes up a big chunk of headroom at the trailing edge of the sedan's headliner. The coupe's rear seating is a little tighter, and the convertible's tighter still, especially in shoulder and hip room. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it; very tasteful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels.  the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that allows every owner to use the sound system's features, and to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions, with a trip computer and driver information system that's easy, intuitive and fun to use. The audio system works well and the knobs are sized well for operating while driving, a welcome relief from the tiny buttons and knobs on many systems. It's remarkable how easily it works, and keeps conversation possible even at very high road speeds. It's an interesting feature and we recommend it.  the convertible's top was engineered with karmann, which specializes in convertibles. The big top opens and closes within 30 seconds, storing under the truck lid and a hard tonneau cover when open. We found it works exceptionally well, powering up or down with the press of a button. Hold the button down after it's done and the windows will power up or down appropriately.  the trunk is still accessible when the top is down, but space is reduced from a tiny 5. 8 cubic feet to a grocery-bag sized 1. 8 cubic feet. The trunklid on the convertible was heavy and relatively hard to lift open. driving impressionthe pontiac g6 is fun to drive and quite pleasant for cruising around. We found the sedan, coupe and convertible models reasonably quiet around town.

2002 toyota avalon review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big and pleasant surprises. introductionthe toyota avalon is a large, comfortable sedan with tight handling and a flawless ride. It has plenty of power and excellent brakes. Electronic wizardry and a well-developed chassis makes it an easy car to handle in hazardous road conditions.  when equipped with the available front bench seat, it can transport six passengers in typical toyota comfort and quiet serenity. It's toyota's flagship sedan. lineuptwo models of avalon are available. The xl comes with front bucket seats 25,845) or a bench 26,665).  xls reverses the pricing with the bench seat version 30,305) being less expensive than the same vehicle with bucket seats 30,405).  both models use toyota's silky-smooth 3. 0-liter v6. This engine produces 210 horsepower with 220 pounds-feet of torque.  xl models come fully equipped with side air bags, dual-zone air conditioning, power windows, door locks and mirrors, and a 120-watt am/fm stereo with cassette and cd players. That isn't to say it's unattractive, it's just not eye-catching. It looks like a toyota sedan. The wing-shaped halogen headlights and wide grille with vertical rails provide a slightly toothy smiley-face look. An air dam under the molded front bumper provides a subtle racy touch, and optional flowing trapezoidal fog lamps are needed to complete the facial aesthetics. interiorthe avalon is a roomy car with plenty of shoulder room. However, high windowsills make the chamber feel deep. Carrying long, narrow objects is made easier as the rear center seat has a pass-through that opens up to the trunk.  the interior sports ample doses of burled walnut, good, simple switchgear, and solid-feeling control stalks. There's even a leather boot on the column-shift lever, a nice touch. Also included are soothing electro-chromatic mirrors that self-adjust to reduce glare, and an easy to adjust dual climate-control system providing independent climates for driver and passenger.  the list of interior features is long. The data system is is in a big rectangular window in the center of the instrument panel. The feel of the leather, the doses of walnut, the big recessed instrument panel, and especially the inside shape of the c-pillars, all make the avalon interior reminiscent of a seville. That shouldn't be surprising, as the toyota avalon was designed and built in the usa and a veteran of gm's large-car division led its development team. driving impressionthis car is smooth and quiet with extremely low levels of noise, vibration, and harshness. All we could hear on a rainy day was a creaking in the windshield wipers, like an old screen door opening and closing, opening and closing.  the ride is flawless. Handling via rack-and-pinion steering is tight, even direct. While some label this as 'no character,' we think 'purity' is a better call. Oh, the chassis can be felt lightly rising and falling over undulations, but that's not a flaw, it's a soft balance appropriate to the car.  michelin 205/60r16 tires were impressive in the wet. We could see the water, we could hear it, but we couldn't feel it. We hit a shallow double pothole in the river. We heard a light thump, but scarcely felt it. We drove over a washboard-unpaved road. We felt it, but not much.  then we got a little daring in the wet, blasting through a two-lane sweeper heavy on the throttle at 65 mph. Something faster, smarter and more sensitive than us was doing all the tricky work.  we mashed the brake pedal as hard and fast as we could. Excellent anti-lock brakes said, 'no problem. Because we were full on the pedal, brake assist wasn't triggered. We never felt them, they were so smooth.  we saved the most exotic technology for last: vehicle skid control. It's a lexus hand-me-down, remaining innovative as it moves along from $50,000 cars to $30,000 cars. It's only available on the xls, but for only $650, it's a real deal. Using throttle or brake intervention, vsc makes the appropriate adjustment in grip. We found a sharp curve with good visibility and no ditch. We charged it at spinout speed: all gas, no brakes. Vsc had cut the throttle and hit the abs brakes on all but the outside rear wheel. 2010 pontiac g6 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The pontiac g6 sedan, coupe and convertible received a refreshed exterior/interior design for mid-year 2009 that carries-over for 2010. Interior features such as standard air-conditioning, theft-deterrent audio system with speed compensated volume, and chrome accents further enhance this cars appeal. With 4-wheel abs and all-speed traction control, these vehicles are well equipped to prevent an accident. Should an accident occur, all models feature front, driver and passenger airbag system that enhances occupant safety. The sedan and coupe feature additional seat-mounted side-impact and overhead curtain airbags. For 2010, panic brake assist is now standard on coupe and convertible while power lumbar is standard across the board. Passenger Airbag
