2005 honda element review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The perfect accessory for beach parties. introductionthe honda element is the versatile box of motor vehicles, combining unique and practical features with a kind of military/utilitarian chic. Element provides all that. Its seats are designed to get wet. Inside and out, it looks like a little truck. But it's built with components from the honda civic, so it drives more like a car than a truck-based suv.  the element was all-new for 2003. Honda has made few changes since then. Models with all-wheel drive feature a large rear skylight that tilts open or removes completely and stores inside the vehicle.  the 2005 honda element comes in two trim levels, lx and ex. Silver ex models are accented by blue cladding and trim, while red and magnesium ex models feature black trim.  safety features on all elements include front seatbelts with pre-tensioners and load limiters to reduce the chance of belt-related injuries. The element earned a five-star rating for both driver and front-seat passenger in the federal (nhtsa) frontal crash test. As mentioned, 2005 ex models include abs and front-seat side-impact airbags, the latter designed to protect driver and front-passenger's torsos. Curtain airbags, designed for head protection in a side impact or rollover, are not available. walkaroundthe honda element is one funky looking car. For one thing, the front fascia, front and rear fenders, and rocker panels are all made of a scratch- and dent-resistant composite molded in dark gray (though a few ex models get color-coordinated trim).  from the front, the element has a cheeky, chunky look accentuated by rectangular headlights and the unusual design of the bumper. The side of the vehicle has a distinct shape unlike any other on american roads. The hood line is fairly low and leads to a steep windshield flowing into a gently curved roofline; while the rear tailgate is nearly vertical.  that tailgate is split horizontally so that the lower half can be used as a seating surface for parties. The element's rear corners are nicely curved, so it does not look as chunky from behind. Large 16-inch wheels help ensure the element doesn't look like a minivan. interiorthe honda element has lots of room for passengers and cargo, with a flexible interior designed to handle all combinations of people and stuff. The front seat area provides acres of headroom, and there's no center tunnel between the front seats to get in the way.  the rear seats are roomy as well. They're raised off the floor a couple of inches higher than the front seats, giving back-seat passengers better visibility over the front seats. However, we found rear-seat passengers complained about not being able to see signs and buildings; they have to stoop to see out the windshield. This makes the element a poor choice for taking a group sightseeing.  one of the most talked-about features of the element is its pillarless, rear-hinged back doors. With no b-pillars to get in the way, there's easy access to the rear seating area. For safety reasons, however, the rear side doors cannot be opened unless the front door has been opened first. Likewise, the rear doors have to be closed before the front side doors can be closed. This design results in a shuffle whenever dropping off back-seat passengers because the front-seat occupants have to unbuckle their seatbelts and open their doors to let rear passengers in or out. The center-opening doors allow easy loading of bulky objects without having a pillar to get in the way. The rear seats fold down easily, and can be swung up to the side, leaving an uninterrupted flat floor space. The front passenger seatback can be folded forward to make room for a 10-foot surfboard, which would still leave room for the driver and one passenger behind the driver: two surfers, two surfboards, in other words. All the seats, including the driver's, can be folded back to make a large, albeit uncomfortable, double bed. When parked, the element can be set up to serve as a giant locker for outdoor gear, a truly great feature. The front seats are coated in a waterproof material designed for easy cleaning as well. The rear seats are covered with the same material on lx and ex models.  storage areas abound. The backs of the front seats have large storage pockets. Cup holders can be found on the backs of folded seats. The element should be good for tailgate parties.  up front, the dashboard reflects the simple design of the element. The gauges are contained in three deep pods, shielding them from the sun. Climate and radio controls are well placed. The ex provides an auxiliary jack for digital media, such as an apple ipod, so the stored music can be played back directly through the element's sound system. We didn't find the automatic transmission to be as much fun as the manual.  element is a front-wheel-drive vehicle so there is a touch of torque steer, that tugging of the steering wheel under hard acceleration, but it isn't a concern. A bigger issue was wheelspin in the wet. Step on the gas, and it's easy to spin the front wheels on front-wheel-drive models, particularly in the rain. All-wheel drive cures this.  the ride quality is bouncy. From an engineering standpoint, the honda element is basically a re-bodied cr-v; and the cr-v is built on the same platform as the honda civic. The element has a slightly wider track than the cr-v, which helps it handle curves better than we expected of such a tall vehicle. Speaking of tall, the ground clearance and ride height are sufficient for primitive roads, but the element is not an off-road vehicle by any stretch of the imagination. Nor is it supposed to be.  xm satellite radio is available and can be a great companion on long trips, delivering cd-quality sound nearly everywhere. Not having to change stations on a cross-country trip has distinct advantages. Finding stations is made easier with rds (radio data system), which identifies programming on the radio's display. (xm requires a subscription fee, which starts at about $10 per month.). summarythe honda element is a compelling option for drivers who want a genuine utility vehicle that behaves like a car. Its versatile interior makes the element quite handy in certain situations, with its easy access and flat floor that's easy to clean. Looks are part of the attraction here. We liked it and found it appeals to people of all ages.  new car test drive correspondent john rettie is based in santa barbara, california; with editor mitch mccullough reporting from redondo beach. model lineuphonda element lx 2wd 17,450); lx 4wd 18,850); ex 2wd 19,525); ex 4wd 20,925). assembled ineast liberty, ohio. options as testednone. model testedhonda element ex 2wd 19,525). 2008 hyundai elantra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy and affordable compact sedan. introductionthe hyundai elantra was completely redesigned for 2007, and the 2008 models come standard with more safety features.  the elantra features handsome styling with nice lines. The ride is good, although a bad freeway with relentless sharp bumps is more than the elantra can accept without passing on some of the annoyance to the front seats. We found the brakes excellent and the cornering good.  for 2008, the elantra se comes with electronic stability control and brake assist, which were not available on 2007 models. A tire pressure monitoring system has been added.  because the elantra generally costs less than the competition, it might well be a long-term bargain. Xm satellite radio is built into the sound system.  the se 16,225) is the sporty model and includes all the options in the gls preferred package, plus a telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, and 16-inch alloy wheels with wider profile tires. A premium package 1150) includes a power sunroof and heated front seats. A tire pressure monitoring system comes standard on all models. It's vastly better looking than before; the elantra no longer announces that it's for old folks. It's 2. 2 inches taller, 2. 0 inches wider, and 1. 6 inches longer in wheelbase than the previous-generation elantra. Still, with all the aggressive designs on the road nowadays, a compact car like the elantra, clean as it is, won't catch many eyes.  the elantra received a lot of careful design work, and could pass for being seamless. That quality fitting also reveals itself in the smooth opening and closing of the doors.  the elantra's good looks move this korean compact car toward the world of the stylish. Its sculpture is clean, with a high beltline running along at the body-colored door handles. It's got a subtle face, with trapezoidal headlamps having rounded edges, leading down and in to a cup-shaped grille with three simple chrome bars. At the bottom of the fascia is a long, slim air intake with two bars. It lacks definitive fender flares because it doesn't need them; the elantra doesn't shout to be seen. The wheel covers, which are silver plastic on the gls, look good from a distance. interiorthe 2008 hyundai elantra is larger than pre-2007 models, making for a roomier car than the toyota corolla or honda civic. The added width and height increased the elantra's cabin volume to 112. 1 cubic feet, among the best in the compact class.  the front seats are quite comfortable, with good bolstering, and the standard beige cloth is smooth though unexciting. The arcs of the speedo and tach are a thin blue line, with red needles pointing the way.  the radio control knobs are blessedly simple, like radio knobs should be. But we didn't care for the trim on the dash; imagine a silver plastic golf ball.  in the rear, the 35 inches of leg room is a half-inch more than the civic and sentra, and 1. 5 inches less than the 2009 corolla, give or take a tenth. But the elantra has good hip room.  elantra has a large trunk. For carrying cargo, the rear seatbacks fold down to allow a pass-through into the trunk. However, the opening isn't vast like the nissan sentra's.  storage compartments are abundant. There's a neat box inside the top of the dash, and a sunglasses container in the headliner. The fixed door pockets have built-in bottle holders. Below the three climate control knobs there's a small companion to the glovebox, and below that, forward of the shift lever, there's also an open storage area. There are two cupholders behind that, and a double console under the driver's elbow.  generally, the interior is notably quiet, for a compact car. The elantra is surprisingly, pleasantly, game, however. It's a rare front-wheel-drive compact car that can pass this test. The elantra will spin the inside front wheel, but it keeps turning around the corner instead of sliding straight ahead. The suspension engineers have done something right, in the front end of the elantra.  the elantra is softer all around than the sportier nissan sentra or mazda3. Overall, it's a good fit for someone who just wants good transportation without attitude. It asks less involvement from the driver than those other two.  the brakes are excellent. We really stood on them a few times, and they didn't allow the car to dart or weave while they sharply brought down the speed.  the five-speed manual gearbox worked well. The tachometer shows 3500 rpm at that speed, and it's not in the least bit buzzy. It also accelerates away at low rpm in a higher gear, with 136 pound-feet of torque. Redesigned for 2007, the styling holds its own in the class; it looks very clean but doesn't try to draw attention to itself. The seats are comfortable, the brakes are excellent, and cornering capability is good, making it enjoyable to drive. 2004 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The first choice in size extra large. introductionsince the chevrolet suburban first appeared in the mid-1930s, its mission has not wavered. It remains the first choice for anyone who needs to haul six or more people plus their cargo. It's based on a superbly engineered full-size truck frame. Its v8 engines deliver strong torque for towing heavy loads and it's supremely stable when pulling heavy trailers through nasty, windy weather. Suburban provides a stable, comfortable ride for long-distance travel. Last but not least, it's fully capable of slogging down muddy two-tracks, whether in pursuit of the great outdoors or to get some work done.  the suburban received a substantial update for 2003, with more than 40 major changes designed to enhance safety and improve reliability. The stabilitrak electronic stability program became available for improved control on slippery surfaces. New airbag systems were designed to better protect children and adults of various sizes. Adjustable pedals became available for the comfort and safety for drivers of smaller stature. The brakes were refined, and an all-new electrical architecture promised improved reliability. Xm satellite radio became available, along with a new panasonic dvd system for back-seat monkeys.  changes for 2004 enhance safety further. New hydroboost brakes provide power assist even if the engine stalls or is turned off. A tire-pressure monitor is now standard. New options include stand-alone traction control and 17-inch all-weather tires. Most people find the 1500 models meet their needs.  suburban 1500 models come equipped with a 5. 3-liter v8. The 2500 models are available with a choice of 6. 0-liter or 8. 1-liter v8s.  two trim levels are available: ls 37,050) and ls 4wd 39,850), and lt 41,920) and lt 4wd 44,720).  ls models come standard with three-zone manual air conditioning, a 40/20/40 split bench front seat with six-way power for the driver, 60/40 split folding middle bench seat, fog lamps, assist steps, powered and heated outside mirrors, and a rear window defogger. A preferred equipment group 1,035) adds bucket seats with upgraded cloth upholstery, a floor console, and a bose nine-speaker audio system with rear controls and headphone jacks.  lt models are more luxurious, adding automatic climate control, leather seat inserts, power folding mirrors with in-glass turn signals and electrochromic dimming on the driver's side, the bose stereo, and many other features.  the z71 off-road package 5,215) includes heavy-duty springs and gas-pressure shocks, plus special appearance items outside and lt-grade comfort and convenience features inside.  entertainment options include a panasonic dvd player 1485 on ls, $1295 on lt) with wireless headphones, auxiliary audio/video jacks and remote game plug-in. Xm satellite radio (standard on lt, $325 on ls, plus a subscription fee) receives 100 coast-to-coast channels, many of them commercial-free. An electric tilt-and-slide sunroof is available ls and lt 995-$1290). walkaroundthere's no mistaking the 'burb. The chevrolet suburban looks like an old friend. It hasn't been completely redesigned since 2000, and the 2004 model retains a family resemblance to suburbans far older than that.  two tailgate configurations are available. The one-piece rear hatch 250) works best for most families. It's lightweight and can be opened with one hand. It comes with a window wiper/washer, and the one-piece window affords the driver a good view rearward. Traditional side-by-side cargo doors are also available. Cargo doors are useful when pulling trailers because they will usually clear the trailer tongue jack. They can also make it easier to control a dog while opening them. In this latest version of the suburban, the hinges are engineered to let the doors open wide without having to be manually disconnected.  a puddle lamp mounted below the lt's side mirrors shines down to light up the perimeter. It can be turned on using the keyless remote. That's a nice feature when approaching the suburban in a dark parking garage, as it illuminates underneath the vehicle. In most respects, it is identical to the more luxurious gmc yukon xl, which was called suburban until recent years. interiorcleverly designed seating maximizes the hauling potential of the chevrolet suburban. The third-row seatback folds down without having to remove the headrests, then the whole thing flips forward to substantially increase cargo capacity. A short prop rod locks it into place. The one-piece seat can be removed and is mounted on wheels, but it weighs 75 pounds, so removing it is a lot easier with a second person to help. We've done it.) loading cargo is easy because there's plenty of space for it. The lt's leather seats seem more supportive, but there's still room for improvement. Big and cushy, they are similar to the seats found in all of gm's full-size pickups and suvs.  the second row is quite comfortable. Headphone jacks (standard on lt, optional on ls) allow rear-seat passengers to listen to cds while those up front turn on the radio. Running boards make it easier for others. The suburban's step-in height is lower than it was with pre-2000 models, because of the fully boxed frame.  power-adjustable pedals allow shorter drivers to sit farther back from the steering wheel and farther away from the airbag, reducing the chance of injury should it deploy. Dual-level airbags, an important new feature introduced last year, inflate with less force in less forceful collisions. Sensors in the front passenger seat and seat belts measure the size and weight of the front-seat passenger and disable the airbag for child-size passengers. driving impressionride quality in the chevy suburban 1500 is smooth, greatly improved over the previous-generation (pre-2000) models. The standard premium smooth ride suspension features a hydraulically controlled rear self-leveling system to keep the suburban at a normal ride height even when carrying heavy loads. Whether towing a horse trailer or picking up a soccer team, autoride continually adjusts the suspension for optimum ride and handling. This technology also helps reduce dive when braking (so that the nose of the vehicle doesn't dip down unduly), and body roll (or lean) during cornering, both of which improve stability.  handling is excellent for a big, heavy truck. The steering is responsive and doesn't isolate the driver from the road. The suburban grips the road surprisingly well for such a large vehicle. We never lost traction while pushing hard over wet mountain roads. We drove into wet turns as quickly as we'd ever want to go in a big suv and never lost grip. Part of this is due to the superbly engineered chassis. The entire front part of the frame is hydroformed from one piece of metal, a design that's much more rigid than a bunch of pieces of frame welded together.  brakes on all suburbans work smoothly and progressively, providing stopping power without drama. The suburban's braking system was completely redesigned for model-year 2000 and further refined for 2003 for better performance, improved pedal feel and quieter operation. A dynamic rear proportioning system continuously balances the front and rear brakes for maximum braking without activating the abs. Once it does activate, the abs allows the driver to maintain control of the steering in an emergency braking maneuver. Hydroboost braking, introduced for 2004, uses power-steering fluid pressure instead of engine vacuum to reduce braking effort. That provides added safety, with more reserve power assist for braking under specific conditions. Stabilitrak measures where the driver is steering against where the truck is actually heading and, when necessary, reduces engine torque or selectively applies.
